Individuals who experienced abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope following their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is pushing for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an unprecedented summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate shared they were victimized by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they plan to submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a step in the right direction," Hickey commented.

Hickey added that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can change how the narrative ends - he valued that."
