Our Top Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

At first glance, this album could seem closer to a difficult university examination than the latest pop album by a musician whose last hit featured a global pop icon. Broken across 4 different parts and sung in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring female mystery, religious transcendence, and physical change, often by way of the perspective of different female saints. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with raw openness elsewhere—is launched upwards here, carried by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of other artists appear rather small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry intellectual posturing is almost a miracle, with sole praise going to the artist. Although it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds with the present, the stakes are much higher on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the legendary Björk at her height, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, the listener still want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That playful energy shines brightly on a stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four moments. Then, all the music drops silent, and there's a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes down like cartoonish force. The song immediately segues to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—nor want to predict—where it is going next."

Almost each track concludes at a totally different point than where it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic work begins out moody and brooding, with prowling vocals, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

A key achievement on Lux involves straddling the gap between bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins upward. That feat is echoed on another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux is pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires time to fully mine but never seem like hard work. While some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish feast where the guests at it, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless men. It is a modern-day musical from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
