Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the championship lead from his teammate by one point after his victory in Mexico City two weeks ago, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, sitting 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his team followed a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, though minor, when he lost control at Turn Four during the early running. Tsunoda spun out over the exit kerbs before sliding over the escape zone, and was fortunate to escape with just a slight brush of the wall. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho corner approaching the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were well clear of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs slower than the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
