Chinese Ice Dancers Face Investigation Following Holding Toy Missile at Event

ISU officials have launched a formal inquiry after a pair of Chinese figure skaters were seen with what looked like a replica weapon at an international skating competition.

Television video captured Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing sitting alongside a large toy in the form of a missile marked “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results at the “kiss and cry” area on Saturday.

The DF-61 is a recently introduced China-produced ground-launched long-range weapon capable of transporting atomic warheads, that had been unveiled during a national ceremony recently.

“The ISU have acknowledged of an unsuitable soft toy seems to have been among those thrown on to the rink by spectators after a performance during the competition,” the organization stated in an emailed statement.

The item was subsequently handled by the skaters who had just performed. We apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”

The duo finished eighth out of ten teams during the ice dancing competition, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States.
